Historic Pilgrim's Rest
This walk takes you through the historic centre of the delightful old mining town of Pilgrim's Rest. Start where the road from Sabie enters the town's main street. You will see a succession of historic buildings on your left. First is the small Anglican Church of St Mary, made of brick. Next comes the corrugated-iron Town Hall, followed by Leadley's Building. If you look towards the creek on your right, you will see some of the old alluvial diggings. From here on in quick succession are: the Old Print House, now a shop; the Pilgrim's and Sabie News; and the European Hotel. At this point bear right along the curving stretch of road leading to the Tourist Information Centre. On your right is a house with a wide veranda. This is Chaitow, named after its former owner, the jack-of-all-trades C Train: Chaitow. Next on the right is the Information Centre, where you can buy a ticket giving admission to all the town's museums. The Royal Hotel, opposite, has displays of old mining gear. Walk on past the Information Centre, continuing to bear right. The old Post Office on the left is now a museum. Opposite, to the right, is the Miner's House Museum, which demonstrates the lifestyle of a miner in the 1910s, with furniture made from old dynamite boxes. If you have the time, get a map from the Information Centre and take the longer walk to see the historic Cemetery, the Central Reduction Works and the stone-built Joubert Bridge.
